About The Work
This set of two images of solitary female nudes are characteristic of Malerie Marder's ability to establish both distance and intimacy between viewer and subject. The first image shows a woman suspended above a large, rumpled bed, giving the impression simultaneously of leaping and levitating. In the second photograph, a woman leans against a window looking out at the view beyond. Though the figure dominates the foreground, she is out of focus, while the city beyond is sharply defined. The uncertainty of the narrative and the relationship between the photographs creates an interesting and complex tension for which Marder is known.
