Mark Handforth

Mark Handforth’s beguiling works compile aspects of Minimalist, Pop, and Surrealist sculpture in large-scale installations that often overflow the bounds of the gallery space. Handforth utilizes objects and forms from the everyday civic landscape—streetlights, signage, and fluorescent tubes—that he mutates by torqueing, scaling, and placing in unexpected juxtapositions. His Lamppost sculptures, for example, twist the familiar city lighting apparatus into snaking forms that serve as utilitarian light sources and simultaneously mystify our expectations of everyday urban infrastructure.

Handforth has installed public works in New York’s Central Park and Zurich’s Maagplatz, as well as at Cluny Abbey in Cluny, France. He was born in Hong Kong, and lives and works in Miami, US.
