Matthias Hoch

The work of German photographer Matthias Hoch derives inspiration from the physical and conceptual notion of structure. Often seen as a comment on the dehumanizing nature of cities, his monumental photographs capture the symmetry, sequence, and elemental architecture of human civilization. While the images are taken in a variety of cites all across Europe, Hoch strives to rid his compositions of any discernable context, instead melding his subjects into a shared “architectural vocabulary.”

Hoch has participated in a number of international solo exhibitions throughout his career including Rena Bransten Gallery, San Francisco, CA, Studio d'Arte Contemporanea Pino Casagrande, Rome, Italy, Leonhardi-Museum, Dresden, Germany, Kunsthalle, Bremen, Rocket Gallery, London and Lindenau-Museum Altenburg, Altenburg, Germany. Solo exhibitions include Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin, LACMA, Los Angeles, Las Palmas Art Exhibition Center, Rotterdam, San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, San Jose, Nederlands Foto Instituut, Rotterdam, VOX, Montreal, Canada and P.S. 1, New York.
