Matt Magee

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Matt Magee has experimented widely with abstract and conceptual art practices. Working variously in painting, drawing, sculpture, and assemblage, Magee’s art not only responds to earlier abstractionists; the work also references contemporary scientific, ecological, and technological advancements. Furthermore, Magee is attune to language and has dedicated entire works to a single phrase or word in exploration of meaning through a symbolic, almost hieroglyphic visual format. Green Standard, Magee’s 2007 tapestry-like assemblage of cut-up detergent bottles, is exemplary of the artist’s multidisciplinary approach, as it constitutes a melding of high formalism and social responsibility.

Magee was a 2007 Josef and Anni Albers Foundation resident fellow and winner of the Board of Trustees Award from the Silvermine Arts Center. A Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant recipient in 1991, Magee has exhibited his work worldwide since the mid-1980s.
