Mauricio Ancalmo

Paris-based, American artist Mauricio Ancalmo works from a multicultural perspective, crafting art in video, sculpture, photography, film, and sound. Ancalmo is particularly noted for his elaborate, large-scale installations, which are laden with analog or discarded objects such as word processors, projectors, turntables, player pianos, and sewing machines. Experiential in nature, Ancalmo's installations present new ways of interacting with such mechanical objects, particularly because they often incorporate sound—player piano rolls, sound tape, and film loops all add sensorial complexity to Ancalmo's constructed environs.

Ancalmo's work has been exhibited on both the East and the West Coasts, including at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, The Exploratorium, Eli Ridgway Gallery, BRX Gallery, Ever Gold Gallery, and SOMArts, all in San Francisco, and James Cohan Gallery in NYC, as well as the Palais de Tokyo Jardins in Paris, France.
