    About The Work

A few years ago, independently from one another, artists Paul McCarthy and Mike Bouchet both made a work that transformed the Guggenheim New York into a toilet. This coincidence sparked an ongoing conversation about shared interests in the politics of art institutions and their architecture. This edition, created for the occasion of the artist’s 2014 show at Portikus, exemplifies their interest in excess, exaggeration, parody, mis-appropriation, dysfunctionality, and immoderation. Incorporating various elements from their multi-layered exhibition, including "gummi" tar and "Spanish Donkey," a medieval torture device used to split people in half, alive, the work is a synthesis of shared beliefs and interests—facilitating a playful and highly proliferous gathering and framing of ideas between two bold artists.
