Molly Herman

Molly Herman’s paintings, typically large-scale and multi-layered, often reveal her foundation as a printmaker by incorporating simple printmaking techniques in her painterly compositions. Upon noticing that a small section of a larger work could potentially contain and express a world of it’s own, she was inspired to create Swatch Series. As a professor, and life-long student of Color Theory, Herman viewed Swatch Series as a way to focus on color and exploit the simplified mark: dot, dash, line, through use of hand made stamps and stencils. Each painting is built from a sequence of repeatable marks, using various tools and focused on a specific color range, thus developing a dynamic rhythmic composition.
