Molly Herman

Molly Herman’s paintings, typically large-scale and multi-layered, often reveal her foundation as a printmaker by incorporating simple printmaking techniques in her painterly compositions. Upon noticing that a small section of a larger work could potentially contain and express a world of it’s own, she was inspired to create Swatch Series. As a professor, and life-long student of Color Theory, Herman viewed Swatch Series as a way to focus on color and exploit the simplified mark: dot, dash, line, through use of hand made stamps and stencils. Each painting is built from a sequence of repeatable marks, using various tools and focused on a specific color range, thus developing a dynamic rhythmic composition. Herman was born in Washington D.C. and grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. After receiving her BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, Herman researched art history and archeology in France in Spain before returning to the U.S. to pursue her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Herman is the recipient of the Summer Research Grant from City and Country School in New York, a Lifetime Arts Grant from the Brooklyn Central Public Library, a Boynton Fellowship Grant from the Vermont Studio Center among other awards and grants.
