Murad Khan Mumtaz

Informed by his training in the centuries-old practice of Indian miniature painting, the work of Pakistani artist Murad Khan Mumtaz addresses the past, present, and future. Mumtaz's paintings meditate on instances of disappearance evident throughout various landscapes. Humble in scale but vast in their depiction of space, his tiny, enigmatic paintings raise oblique questions about the fate of indigenous culture and open land. These inquiries are relevant to a wide range of post-colonial landscapes, including that of his native Pakistan, where the land continues to be a site of conflict between traditional societies and modern economic interests.

Mumtaz’s work has been exhibited internationally, including solo presentations at Tracy Williams, Ltd. New York, Canvas Gallery, Karachi, Pakistan, and La Caja Blanca in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. He completed his second artist residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute and is a co-founder of the Hast-o-Neest Center for Traditional Art and Culture in Lahore, and has published numerous articles on the history of miniature painting.
