About The Work
"Butch in the Tub, NYC, 1988" is a paradigm of Goldin's portraiture of New York's downtown scene, from one of her most desirable eras of production. This image was originally included in her groundbreaking and most famous body of work, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency.
Here Goldin captures her friend Butch, who appeared in a number of Goldin's portraits, pregnant and smiling in a bubble bath. Butch's arms wrap around herself in a loving embrace while a warm glow of light sensuously envelopes her nude body. Framed by square black-and-white bathroom tiles, Butch exudes an aura of unabashed joy and hope. Goldin frequently depicted her subjects, including herself, in bathrooms around the world - and is an important motif/setting in her oeuvre.
The images from The Ballad of Sexual Dependency range in tone from bruised and tragic to hopeful, resilient, and full of joy. "Butch in the Tub" is clearly an example of the latter.
