    About The Work

For this work, Graves studied objects in the collection of The Jewish Museum. For instance, the bird figure in the lower right corner is derived from an early Byzantine mosaic floor tile, and the head of a woman in the upper left corner is inspired by a Roman terracotta head. Graves combines these elements with organic motifs and images of frogs like those she used in a 1971 drawing called Five Frogs. Graves layered these images with brightly colored lines and shapes to create an abstract work that suggests a three-dimensional interaction between parts, which recede and advance in the picture plane. Linda Konheim Kramer, Executive Director Emeritus of the Nancy Graves Foundation, outlined how Graves emulated the layering of quotations used in this print when she began to regularly incorporate objects from ancient Egypt, classical antiquity, and the Renaissance into her sculptures and prints around 1988. Graves said she used this kind of layering of historical and modern quotations in order “to simulate the layers of human history.”
