    About The Work

Working in painting, sculpture, and printmaking, Nicole Eisenman’s images refer to both classical imagery and contemporary pop culture, offering insight into both current culture and art history. For Untitled (Red), Eisenman employed the ancient relief printing technique, woodcut, by carving a line drawing out of the surface of a block of wood. Ink was then rolled onto the block using a roller (or brayer), depositing ink upon the flat surface but not in the areas that the artist has cut out. In this case, yellow ink was deposited onto the paper before the block was used to make the print. As a result, the linework is yellow in some places and white (the color of the paper) in others. The figure in the print is drawn in profile, seemingly kissing a bird perched on the subject’s finger. The bird can also be construed as a speech bubble, a classic representation of conversation in comic books and graphic novels.
