    About The Work

This photograph depicts a painted portrait of the artist’s grandmother, rendered by her grandfather, from which the subject’s face has been cut out. Artist Nina Korhonen found the portrait after her grandmother’s death; without knowing why the painting was cut or what happened to the missing piece, she hung it back on the wall (its patterened wallpaper is visible here). The partial portrait calls to mind Modernist tactics of the 20th century, when the artistic avant-garde subjected canvases to all manner of transformations and gestural actions, including slicing and puncturing them. For Korhonen, the altered painting also serves as a poignant symbol of the personal loss of a loved one.
