Patricia Piccinini

Patricia Piccinini’s hyper-realistic sculptures envision transgenic, humanoid constructs. Made from silicone, fiberglass, and materials like human hair and leather, the creatures are eerily lifelike hybrids–both repellant and loveable. “The world I create exists somewhere between the one we know and one that is almost upon us. However, what I imagine is neither the nightmare future environmental ruin nor the brave new world of perfect scientific progress. Instead, I focus on the internal, emotional lives of the new creatures that might emerge, along with questions about the kinds of relationships that might come to light along side them,” says Piccinini of her strange yet vulnerable beings.

She has had solo exhibitions at institutions such as Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, Arter Space For Art in Istanbul, Leeahn Gallery in Daegu and Seoul, Des Moines Art Center, and Frye Museum in Seattle. Her work has been included in numerous major group exhibitions internationally, including at dOCUMENTA (13), Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and the Brooklyn Museum. Her work was presented at the Australian Pavilion of the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003.
