Paul Davis

Paul Brooks Davis was an American graphic artist. He studied with illustrators Philip Hays and Robert Weave and graphic designer and artist George Tschemy before going on to produce his first commissioned illustration, which appeared in the October 1959 issue of Playboy magazine. After finishing his studies at the School of Visual Arts, Davis went to work for Push Pin Studios, where he practiced his trade by illustrating celebrities, record album covers, book jackets, and advertisements. He worked closely with newspapers and magazines such as Life, Time, Harper's Bazaar, and the the New Yorker and in 1963, he formed the Paul Davis Studio. Davis's posters and paintings for the entertainment industry have been the focus of many museum and gallery shows, including a major exhibition at the MoMA in 1987. He has been honored with awards such as the AIGA Medal, honorary doctorates from School of Visual Arts and the Maryland Institute College of Art, and by societies including The Drama Desk and the Art Directors Club.
