About The Work
Pierre & Gilles (Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard) began their creative collaboration in France during the late 1970’s. Together they created a vivid fantasy world of their own, a fusion of painting and photography, pop culture and art history, kitsch and glamour.
Subjects are costumed and situated in dreamlike mise en scènes. Pierre is responsible for the photographs and Gilles paints the image once printed to canvas. Together they create artwork that is full of magic and queer mischief.
Their unmistakable aesthetic originates from graphic printing and French commercial photography popularized in the 50’s, a time when Pierre & Gilles were growing up in France. However outside of France the references seem more aligned with 80's porn, Disney fantasies and James Bidgood.
Autoportrait dans un coeur “Self-portrait in a heart” is an original laminated print held in a tinted resin frame in the shape of a backlit heart. This illuminated sculptural piece is a prime example of Pierre & Gilles’ manipulation of the photographic medium.
Pierre & Gilles rose to fame after producing portraits of famous icons such as Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol. They continued to feature celebrities and friends but in this self-portrait they reveal the dynamic duo that they are.
In the image both men are suited in sailor uniforms and navy caps adorned with their names in glitter. They each hold one side of a ship’s wheel, an illustration of their united bond. This piece is an altar showcasing the driving force of Pierre & Gilles’ passion, their romantic and artistic partnership.
