    About The Work

Documenting the beauty, solitude and destruction of one of natures most timeless organisms, this striking archival print is from an ongoing, decade-long series by Brooklyn-based photographer Rachel Sussman, entitled “The Oldest Living Things in the World.” Traveling throughout the world and working in close collaboration with botanists and biologists, Sussman captures each of her subjects as both individual marvels, and within the larger context of time and human interference. This image, taken in Mount Read, Tasmania, depicts a colony of 10,500-year-old Huon Pines—many of which have been devastated by fire. Says Sussman of her work, “I approach my subjects as individuals of whom I’m making portraits, in order to facilitate an anthropomorphic connection to a deep timescale, otherwise too physiologically challenging for our brain to internalize.”
