Raphael Danke

Berlin based artist Raphael Danke works across media to explore notions of metamorphosis and material ambiguity. Cut outs, collages, found objects, and fragmented sculptures are essential tools in his exploration of the body and its absence. Danke is best known for his ongoing collage series titled Entfernungen or Removals where he cuts out pictures from fashion magazines and removes all traces of the human body. The result is an eerie contradiction between our attraction to the glossy spread and a sense of loss at the erased bodies. His work juxtaposes subject and object, organic and inorganic, and human and inhuman.

Raphael Danke’s work has been widely exhibited in group and solo shows, including Haus der Kunst, Munich, L40, Berlin, Sprengel Museum, Hannover, Van Horn, Düsseldorf, MOT International, Brussels, Kunsthaus Baselland, Basel, International 3, Manchester, and ICA, London.
