About The Work

The Triumph of Night is a sculptural suite in handmade paper by Richard Tuttle. The artist created these lively works through an intimate investigation of the essence of paper, exploring its materialism through the transformation of wet paper pulp into substance. First forming wet pulp into "sandcastles," Tuttle then altered these brightly pigmented structures by various actions and manipulations. Collaborating with Dieu Donné artistic director Paul Wong, Tuttle used this highly structured system of creation, manipulation, and destruction to challenge paper as a vehicle for art-making.

The title of the work reflects the artist's meditation on Triumphs, a series of six poems by the fourteenth century Italian poet Francesco Petrarch. While Petrarch's Triumphs explored the cycle of life through Love, Chastity, Death, Fame, Time, and Eternity, here Tuttle muses on a natural triumph and the cycle of time. In creating this piece as a horizontal series of works the artist recalls the development of the print medium into larger format work, which was historically realized and used to portray a triumph by bringing several sheets together in a linear display. Tuttle considers these works drawings, and as such has designed their "frame" in the form of a handmade box accentuating the mysteriousness of the spaces behind each work. The artist's creation of the work in the studio was documented on digital video, which is included as an accompaniment to the work.
