    About The Work

In Robin Rhode’s suite of 5 digital pigment prints, a stand-in for the artist (his face is obscured by a hat) draws circles on the wall in front of him using a geometrical compass that is attached to his head. The work’s title makes reference to the “panopticon,” the 18th-century circular prison with a point of surveillance and control at its center. Because the word is split in two, the title also references Pan, the Greek deity of fertility and eroticism. The series centers on the mechanics of opticality and the artist’s role as the producer of objects of aesthetic desire. He made this series in an edition of 24.
