About The Work

One of the most important contemporary African artists working today, Romuald Hazoumè uses found objects and discarded commercial materials to investigate histories of slavery, racism and socio-economic realities. Collecting petrol cans from his native Porto Novo, Benin, Hazoumè transforms these culturally significant objects into masks. This piece, a collaboration with the French glassmaking company Daum Crystal, an innovative glassmaking company, influential during the rise of the Art Deco and Art Nouveau movements, evokes the forms of Hazoumè’s mask works in transparent blue.
