About The Work

Artist Ruth Laskey’s modernest compositions are traditionally woven from hand-dyed fibers, the resulting textile embodying the graphic qualities of a print, and the tactility of fabric. In this suite of six prints, the artist has left the loom, translating her method to the realm of printmaking. Each print is a softground etching, which involves using acid to etch into a metal plate to create a relief. Paying homage to the woven textile, the prints are composed using the logic of quilt making, sectioned in to quadrants, and are reminiscent of the Modernist Bauhaus textiles produced in Germany in the early 20th century.
