Ryan James Macfarland

Ryan James MacFarland’s photographs evoke aspects of nature that we understand but cannot see and aspects that we can see but not fully grasp. “My photos are landscape photography without a horizon line,” he explains. MacFarland investigates gravity, weather, and Chaos theory in subjects like the moon during the day, surfaces of water, and creases in bedsheets. The artist shoots exclusively in film, printing each image in a darkroom, in an effort to reduce the possibility of manipulation and thus reconfigure our understanding of natural phenomena.

MacFarland has had solo exhibitions in New York at UA Outpost, Charles Bank Gallery, and Merge Gallery. His work has been included in group exhibitions at David Zwirner Gallery in New York, The American Standard Gallery in Miami, and Habersham Mills in Georgia, among other venues.
