    About The Work

Ryan Gander's practice is an expansive beast, conceptually based and centred upon postulative ‘what-ifs?’, thus stretching and interrogating the rules that society readily accepts as fact.

Gander's works often create fictional histories, as found with Ekow and Abacus Exploring the Dungeon, 2008. The print, a photograph of a watercolour illustration by Mark Beesley, portrays the ICA's former artistic director, Ekow Eshun, carrying an abacus and a torch in the basement of Nash House.
