About The Work

In his recognizably lustrous black and white style, acclaimed photojournalist Sebastião Salgado captures the natural beauty of environments and communities around the world in their unindustrialized state. Sahara, Algeria depicts a lone human figure gazing out on the seemingly endless dunes of the Algerian desert. The shadowed intensity of light in this photograph resonates with the artist’s adherence to simplicity, yet also contributes to the eerie, otherworldly quality of the image, which appears almost hyper-real. As is the case with much of Salgado’s work, the viewer is granted access to a usually unseen ancient cultures and traditions.
