Serge Bloch

Primarily known for his illustrations and children’s books, Serge Bloch’s characters are expressive, charming, and complex despite the simplicity of the marks that make them. Working mostly with black ink on white paper, Bloch has an economical approach to his work, using his marks sparingly. In addition to his classic children’s series, Max and Lili, Bloch’s character SamSam is published in the monthly Pomme d’Api for children and is a hero of an animated television series. As a cartoonist, Bloch has worked for a variety of American publications such as The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Times, among others. In 2005 he received the Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators and in 2007 he received the Bologna Ragazzi Award from the Bologna Children’s Book Fair for his illustrations in The Encyclopedia of dunces, rebels, and other geniuses by Jean-Bernard Pouy.
