Sol'Sax

Sol'Sax is a multi-disciplinary artist whose performance work, sculptures, and videos layer complex connections between African-American and hip-hop culture with Yoruban traditions of West Africa. His artwork is subtle, incorporating clever wordplay or creative symbolism to engage with the public in a discourse about race in America.

One of his exhibits, These Hand Me Down Black and Blue Jeans (a play on the word "genes"), employed denim as a symbol of the fusion of American culture and African ancestry. Another installation, SOL'SNIPPED: Strange Fruit, included coke bottles stacked on each other to look like sugar cane (a play on "coke-cane") and addressed the legal repression of minorities by law enforcement and abuse of power.
