Stefan Kürten

German painter Stefan Kürten creates layered, intricately detailed depictions of suburban landscapes, architecture, and domestic interiors. Typically devoid of overt depictions of figures, human presence is instead referenced obliquely through the portrayal of the familiar spaces of everyday life. As the artist notes, his work extracts "the essence" of the subjects he depicts, exploring the relationship between the built environment and the lives of those within. He often employs a metallic base coat for his paintings and incorporates decorative motifs drawn from wallpaper or textiles, resulting in works that are simultaneously realistic depictions of the mundane and formalist experiments of line and pattern. Kürten's work has been exhibited extensively at institutions such as the Saatchi Gallery in London, the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
