Susan Collis

London-based sculptor Susan Collis is known for crafting ordinary looking, everyday objects from valuable materials. Using diamonds and rare metals, the artist meticulously constructs wall screws and paint-splattered step-ladders, with their suggestion of functionality belying their actual preciousness. "Production is art's dirty secret," Collis has said. "What I'm mainly concerned with is all the stuff that goes on to facilitate the display of everything." In her approach to sculpture, Collins manages to elevate the mundane, celebrate traditional craft techniques, and encourage viewers to take second, closer looks.

Collis’s work has been exhibited at venues including Ikon in Birmingham, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Christchurch Art Gallery in New Zealand, MASS MoCA, the Zabludowicz Collection, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
