    About The Work

The startlingly blunt imagery in Susan Rothenberg’s 1993 woodcut print Dead Rooster results from a kind of allusively gestural image making. Rothenberg depicts a person inspecting a deceased rooster, hung by its legs. She shows the full cycle of natural and rural life with a kind of representation that does not idealize, but rather pays loving attention to the forms of people, animals, and landscapes through sensitive, expressive depiction and considered attention to form and experience.
