    About The Work

This work from British artist Susie Hamilton is from a series entitled Fez, which depicts various ambiguous Moroccan figures as shadows and silhouettes of color, contour and contrast. The artist says of the series, “many of the figures in my work are types of pilgrim, burdened, perplexed and struggling against vast spaces of desert or wilderness. And the figure in Islamic dress, in jellaba, khumur or burqa, is shorthand for this kind of figure, a figure who is rooted in the actual but who also has a spiritual dimension or identity.”
