Tina Barney

Tina Barney is an American artist and photographer best known for her large-scale, color portraits of her family and close friends. Barney is most well known for creating large format, colorful photographs of her privileged East Coast family that straddle the line between candid and tableau photography. These staged situations led her to photograph theater rehearsals amongst New York’s avant-garde, such as the Wooster Group and Richard Foreman’s Ontological-Hysteric Theater. Barney's work is in the collections of the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, New York; the Museum of Modern Art in New York City; the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas; the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection in New York City; and the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago. 

Barney has also produced or co-directed short films on the photographers Jan Groover (Jan Groover: Tilting at Space, 1994) and Horst P. Horst (Horst, 1988).  Jaci Judelson directed a documentary about Barney’s life that aired on the Sundance Channel in 2007. Barney is represented by Janet Borden, Inc. in New York.
