Todd Chilton

The paintings of Chicago-based artist Todd Chilton revel in a loose formalism, simultaneously mathematical and painterly. The casual imprecision of Chilton's brushstrokes belie the organized compositions of the geometric forms prevalent in his works. Though his paintings rely on the strict repetition of basic shapes, the boundary lines that separate their colored forms are often soft-edged and thick with paint, making them inexact delineators. Despite the nonchalance with which Chilton renders his rigid patterns, they remain free of any reference to the artist as an individual; instead the optically vibrant paintings take on personalities of their own, each presenting a different interplay of color and form.
