About The Work
Valeska Gert (1892–1978) was a pioneering performance artist - dancer, cabaret artist, actress and pantomime. There was an exhibition devoted to her as muse at Berlin's Hamburger Bahnhof, 2010-2011, with an accompanying publication. Gert was a pioneering performance artist who is said to have laid the foundations and paved the way for the punk movement.
Umbo's negatives and prints were destroyed in WWII. One vintage print of this image was saved as it was given to fellow Bauhaus artist Paul Citroen in the 1920s shortly after it was made. This print being offered must have been made by photographing the vintage print and creating a new negative after the vintage print emerged was given to Umbo by Citroen around 1975. While some later prints were made as part of a portfolio, this image was not one of them and therefore, very few are known to exist.
