Will Ryman

Will Ryman is best known for his Pop-inspired, wryly humorous large scale sculptures and installations. Prior to devoting himself to visual art, Ryman was a playwright and screenwriter for over a decade, resulting in a sense of theatricality that permeates his work. Using a combination of found objects and other repurposed materials, Ryman creates sculptures that comment on various aspects of the contemporary condition, such as urban life and capitalism. He is also well known for his oversized depictions of flora, often installed in public locations—including the Park Avenue Mall between 57th and 67th Streets in Manhattan in 2011—that playfully augment an aspect of the everyday. Ryman's work has been the subject of solo shows at venues including the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and the Saatchi Gallery in London, and was included in Greater New York 2005 at MoMA PS1.
