Alain Clément

Alain Clément is a French abstract painter whose works grow out of a lifelong exploration of color, lines, curves, physicality, and space. A self-taught painter beginning at the age of twenty, the uniqueness of Clement's work lies in the close relationship that he establishes between painting and sculpture, a relationship enriched by printmaking, a medium he is particularly keen on. Like drawing, printmaking allows him to clarify his research related to space through attention to the accuracy of his lines. 

Clément taught at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier from 1970 until 1977. He began teaching at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes in 1977 and was headmaster of the school from 1985 until 1990. Permanent collections include The Centre Pompidou Paris, Homme Museum of Paris, Hamburger Kunsthalle, and Galería de Arte de Bremen, among others. The artist lives and works in Nîmes, southern France.
