About The Work
Lower East Side Printshop is pleased to introduce two new editions by New York based, distinguished artist Carrie Moyer, Pirate Jenny Returns and Cave Diver. Completed during her Summer 2023 Publishing Residency, the two editions were made in collaboration with the Lower East Side Printshop’s staff, Kyung Eun You and Ian Ruppenthal. Each is a 13-color screenprint with rayon flocking, measuring 30.75 x 22.63 inches (78.1 x 57.5cm) image and sheet, in edition of 16.
The prints exemplify the sumptuous use of color and inventive melding of abstraction and representation, for which Moyer is well known. The title ‘Pirate Jenny Returns’ alludes not only to the beloved song from Bertoldt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s Threepenny Opera, but also to Moyer’s own 2012 painting inspired by Brecht’s proto-feminist avenging maid. ‘Cave Diver’ further riffs on the character’s name: ‘Low-Dive Jenny’ or ‘Spelunken-Jenny’ in German. The two prints are both singular and related: while they share a bold palette, each composition unfurls spatially in its own way. The torn and twisted nets, the red rayon flocking, serve myriad allusions, from imprisonment to liberation, fishnet stockings to illicit booty.
