About The Work
While the work of Brooklyn-based artist Carrie Moyer incorporates many purely formal elements, her background as an academic and writer adds critical and art historical reference to her chromatic pieces. Rooted in the visual and conceptual foundations of Feminist Art, Moyer’s work reassesses past motifs, updating and transforming iconography to stand on its own. In this striking painting, which incorporates the use of glitter as well as acrylic paint on canvas, swathes of color and a black fishnet pattern overlay a mask-like central form. Moyer’s paintings are often “full of forms that resonate with the strangeness and preliterate opaqueness of archaic sculpture,” an element recognizable in the structure of this unique composition.
