On October 2nd, Artspace partnered with Lehmann Maupin and Alexander Grey galleries in Chelsea on a conversation between the artists Angel Otero and Jack Whitten . The conversation was moderated by curator Isolde Brielmaier , who had met the two painters—who are both deeply influenced by Abstract Expressionism, but approach it through the lenses of different generations and with very divergent material processes—when she included their work in shows at the Savannah College of Art and Design 's deFINE ART festival this spring. Here, in an exclusive Artspace video, watch Otero and Whitten (who currently have shows at Lehmann Maupin and Alexander Gray Associates in Chelsea, respectively ) discuss their approaches to art, the sometimes harrowing solitude of the studio, and how the work of Willem de Kooning , Jackson Pollock , and other AbEx heroes continues to inspire them.
