1. Perhaps most known for directing dark, surrealist films (Eraserhead, 1997; The Elephant Man, 1980; Dune, 1984; Blue Velvet, 1986; Mulholland Drive, 2001) or almost more notably, the cult series Twin Peaks, David Lynch has garnered a cult-like following.

2. Lynch studied painting before working in film, studying at the School of the Academy of Fine Arts in Boston before enrolling in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the ‘60s. He's now revered for his work as a visual artist.

3. Lynch’s moody prints are often abstract, yet reference the body with his signature illusive, noir style. Browse his series’ of photogravure and collographs on handmade paper.

4. In March of this year, the Bonnefanten Museum in the Netherlands hosted a retrospective of Lynch’s work. In 2011, an extensive collection of his drawing, paintings, and photographs was featured in the book Dark Splendor. A major retrospective of Lynch’s work, “The Air Is on Fire,” was displayed in Paris at the Foundation Cartier in 2007.

5. This July, the Manchester International Festival will host “David Lynch Presents,” a three-night music series curated by Lynch (who is also a musician—as if he’s not already good at just about every other possible creative endeavor), who will also be honored at the festival and beyond with screenings under what they’ve called “David Lynch Film Season.”
