About The Work
At age 21, Marc Ohrem-Leclef discovered an abandoned house in Sicily’s Aeolian Islands, where he found letters written by a woman during the 1940s in New York, expressing her longing for family back home. That same summer, he met Ulisse, an Italian youth, capturing a single, intimate photograph of him: smoldering, evidence of an undeclared summer love. Years later, after Marc moved to New York, he returned to the islands and met two Moroccan-Italian brothers, Zouhair and Fakher, who worked as beach vendors. Together, they made images as the two dive into the sea. The ferry between islands is named Ulisse, echoing Marc’s earlier infatuation. Considering themes of belonging and desire in the context of the passage of time, Marc explores the volcanic islands again, including its dormant quarries. The photographs and ephemera Marc has collected here are a personal, poetic log of random and fateful occurrences, suggesting stories of desire and migration. The threads between them are tenuous, spanning years and geographies of overlapping quests. Piecing them together is an act of faith.
‘ULISSE’ was exhibited at NYU in 2024.
