About The Work
An imaginative reproduction of Marcel Duchamp’s readymades and a photo by Duchamp of the shadows they cast, Richard Hamilton’s 2005-6 print Readymade Shadows came from a series of set designs for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Duchamp was a major influence for Hamilton, who was able to extend the Dadaist’s work and connect it directly to Pop Art. The work’s multiple shadows imply the object’s movement, invoking the dimensionality and activity of the object in Cunningham’s dance production.
