    About The Work

Placidus, The Patron Saint of Hunters and the Apparition of the Sacred Swan During the Fabled Chase  is a still taken from Saskia Olde Wolbers' film Pareidolia, which takes as its subject the creation of writer Eugen Herrigel's Zen in the Art of Archery, a 1948 book set in Japan that developed a cult following in Europe. The film is told by a fictional translator, recounting a conversation between a master, an apprentice, and the translator's alter ego, which takes the form of a bird. The film is set inside various “buildings” that evidence elements of traditional Japanese architectural styles.

The term Pareidolia describes the tendency of human perception to find meaning in incidental structures and to seek patterns in random data—for example images of animals or faces in clouds.  The film, typical of the artist’s approach to film-making, is entirely analogue and shot inside model sets crafted by the artist. This film fuses footage of university lecture theatre, an archery hall and various traditional Japanese interiors that fold into themselves, alternated with animatronic birds drinking from dripping plants
