Stanley Whitney

Inspired by Egyptian pyramids and Roman architecture, Stanley Whitney’s paintings are irregular grids of precariously stacked blocks of color, hemmed in by confident strokes along the perimeter of his square canvases. He juxtaposes these individual blocks of color, creating relationships between meeting edges and pressurizing the space between each shape. While his works range in size, from just a few inches to eight square feet, Whitney consistently strives to find a balance between density and open space.
