About The Work

This edition's title points to Ulrike Müller's interest in the literary contributions of Austrian writer Ingeborg Bachmann. Franza is one of a series of novels called Todesarten or "Ways of Dying"  which was left unfinished at the time of the author's death in 1973.  In this piece of writing, Bachmann explores a cluster of oppressive forces in a woman's life, psychological unraveling, and related escape to the desert in Egypt. Created for the BAM+NADA portfolio, the theme "Franza" calls to mind the prophetic and redemptive power of a narrative which emerges as abstraction.
