About The Work
This piece is a 22 x 22 in | 55 x 55 cm mosaic recontextualization of Frida Kalo's "Self Portrait with Monkey)" made up of thousands of small images that are photos of Salma Hayek.
The work is part of Alex Cao's “Immortal" solo show, and it is about memories, merging the magic of antiquity with modern-day art. This new series of mosaics features popular icons, utilizing tiny underlying images—like Frida Kahlo, the Statue of Liberty, and Robert Indiana’s LOVE logo—to create the mosaic, making for a dialogue between the two images present in the mosaic. It is created on canvas with mirrored stainless steel, and the words immortal and stainless-steel share the same word in Chinese, offering the viewer immortality through the legendary Pop icons featured here. The piece is an edition of 9.
