"My paintings depict places. I have worked from the landscape in the plein-air style in the Pennsylvania countryside, on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts in the USA and Costa Rica, and in the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire. I also work from memory. This opens up different options in the paintings, where I do not feel tied to a reality and may find a more lyrical image. I often incorporate silver and gold into my paintings. The way that light reflects on the metallic leaf gives a dramatic light source that can radically change the work. In a way, it has moved my work from 2D to 3D. The immense pleasure that I get from painting is unlike any other activity. I feel so grateful to be a painter. I hope the viewer experiences a similar pleasure when they look at my work."
