Alma Allen

Alma Allen is consumed by both an encyclopedic understanding of art and the awe inspiring power of nature—both impulses can be felt in his organic sculptures whose subjects are the lush qualities of his materials. He uses maple, Yule marble, bronze, and red travertine, among other materials, and often salvages them from the landscape for their odd or special appearance. His abstract forms begin as clay models or digital mock-ups, Allen then proceeds freely, improvising as his materials demand, enabling the natural qualities of his subjects to speak to the form. His dynamic work evokes psychedelic desert vibes that merge with the folklore of the Old West. Allen has exhibited at de Saisset Museum in Santa Clara, California, and participated in the 2014 Whitney Biennial in New York.
