Andrew Masullo

Since the 1980s, painter Andrew Masullo’s practice has emphasized the abstract and the nonobjective, relinquishing all association with the world external to the canvas itself. Masullo—who prefers the term “stuff maker” to artist—asserts that his paintings begin with shapes and develop as would a conversation: the brush communicates with paint as layer upon layer is worked and reworked, until it arrives at a natural point of completion. Masullo’s paintings are titled based on a numbering system, with the artist intentionally avoiding any word associations that might suggest representational content. The only medium he uses is unmixed oil paints, typically in bright, cheery colors, merging a rigorous formalism with a sense of playful humor.
