Brody Condon
Brody Condon addresses the identity of fantasy in contemporary culture, poaching computer and live action role playing (LARP) games and using their principles to stage performative situations. Assuming the roles of an individual from YouTube high on hallucinogenic drugs or submitting to a mock self-actualization seminar for three days, Condon’s participants have a loosely defined script that mutates under the watchful gaze of his camera. The accompanying videos and sculptures in his practice are ethnographic, bringing the durational performances to life beyond the intimate event. Condon also has a deep interest in the aftermath of trauma, and uses these performances to consider the ways in which people might transcend negative, impactful experiences by way of empathy or transforming their roles.
Condon held a residency at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in 2004 and was commissioned by the Anyang Public Art Project in Korea in 2014 and the Edinburgh Arts Festival in 2013 for performances. The artist also participated in the Rotterdam Film Festival, the 2004 Whitney Biennial, Performa 09, and Greater New York at MoMA PS 1 in 2010.
