Julio César Morales

While employing a range of media and visual strategies, Julio César Morales investigates issues of migration, underground economies, and labor, on personal and global scales. Morales works with whatever medium lends itself to a particular project. He has painted watercolor illustrations that diagram human trafficking methods, employed the DJ turntable, produced neon signs, reenacted a famous meal–all to explore social interaction and political perspectives.

Morales has had solo exhibitions at Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art. His artwork has been included in group shows internationally, including at the Lyon Biennale, UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Prospect 3 Biennale in New Orleans, Los Angeles County Art Museum, Frankfurter Kunstverein, Rooseum Museum of Art in Malmo, Fototeca de Havana in Cuba, The Nordic Watercolour Museum in Skärhamn, and muca-Roma in Mexico City. He has received awards from Rockefeller Foundation, The San Francisco Arts Commission’s Public Art Program, and Artadia, among others.
